About the IRRF

In 2008, the International Radiosurgery Research Foundation was organized as a formal 501 (3) (c) tax-exempt cooperative organization by representatives of eleven U.S. and Canadian nonprofit hospitals and medical centers. IRRF was incorporated as a Pennsylvania nonprofit corporation in August of 2009. The IRRF is a multi-institutional clinical cooperative group of centers of excellence that perform stereotactic radiosurgery using the Leksell Gamma Knife. The Leksell Gamma Knife is a non-invasive system for the delivery of radiation therapy to internal areas of the brain that cannot be reached by ordinary surgical techniques. The IRRF will coordinate retrospective and prospective outcomes research, cooperative clinical investigations, and prospective clinical trials conducted at participating institutions to evaluate a variety of clinical indications suitable for gamma knife stereotactic radiosurgery.

The organizations that are now members of IRRF are represented by neurological surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical physicists and researchers from leading academic medical facilities in the United States and Canada. Since its inception, the IRRF has activated a number of retrospective clinical trials, worked on development of a database management program, and begun the process of developing prospective multi-center clinical trials in order to increase the scientific knowledge base and levels of evidence related to the use of the Leksell Gamma Knife.

All consortium research efforts will be directed to the improvement of public health and patient outcomes by increasing the quantity and quality of knowledge related to the treatment of a wide variety of brain and head and neck indications for which stereotactic radiosurgery is an appropriate technology. Results of IRRF–conducted studies have been and will be published in medical journals and otherwise made publicly available for the use of medical professionals.

IRRF will hold an annual meeting for representatives of Members and other Gamma Knife clinicians at which research results and other information related to the effective use of this tool will be shared.

IRRF’s headquarters is currently located at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), one of the original participants. Under the direction of the Board, representatives of the Member institutions coordinate members’ research and publication activities, manage a database of medical information concerning use of the Gamma Knife, and provide communication and administrative support staff.

Gene Barnett, MD, (chair), Jason Sheehan, MD, PhD, (vice chair), Veronica Chiang, MD, (secretary-treasurer), and L Dade Lunsford, MD, (past chair) currently serve as the board members of the executive committee.  Ajay Niranjan, MD, MBA, serves as the executive director.
